Cool Day for a Walk

Joaqui and I were about to go for our morning walk when I felt a sudden gush of cool air. I needed something to warm me up, so I hooked up Joaqui to the car for a while and I ran inside the house for a light jacket.

I was confident Joaqui would be a behaved dog while I leave him for a while. True enough, he was not moving much when I came back to resume our plan of strolling in the neighborhood on that cool, fine day.

Daily Chore

Jasper, after his daily bath . . .

I place him under the stairs and he stays there until he is able to snooze off. He takes his nap for about 30 minutes. If I don't place him there, he would be playing roughly with Joaqui, so I keep them apart for a while until I finish my chores.

Jasper has to take his daily walk in the morning and in the evening or else he gets bored. He is not fond of toys. He looks forward to his regular exercise, in the form of walking.

Come on jasper, time for your walk . . .

Life With A Dog

I cherish my mornings spent with Joaqui.

We usually walk around the area, about 3 rounds daily in the morning and another set in the evening.

Our morning walk is done before breakfast and the evening walk, after dinner. Kinda healthy routine for both of us.

I try to have him exposed with other animals like birds, cats and other dogs during the walk. it is also good take him experience walking on grass and be near the pool. He has not tried a splash into the waters yet, be it a pool or on the beach, though he'snot really afraid of the water.

For me, life is cool with a dog.

I got my mom to visit me last month to relax and have fun at my home a bit. She is a cancer survivor. I just want her to be happy. She's doing fine now.

Seems like our sweet miniature schnauzer over here knows how important our guest is, so our hairy hero joins her on the sofa, as he decided to keep her company. Cool dude!

After his morning bath, some playtime, and a short walk (to pee as well), he sleeps in the living room while the TV is on.

Me, I end up watching him instead of what's on TV, heheh.

Jasper is recuperating from sickness. He was not his usual up-and-about self about two days ago, that is why we had to bring him immediately to the doctor.

Today, he is just fine. The doctor changed his dog food and gave supplementary medicines to be taken one tablet a day for three months plus a recommended shampoo.

He's back to that ever-curious youthful dog. Always looking-out for something, listening to odd noises, checking-out folks, cats, other dogs, cars, etc.

Just letting him on his own for a while as a breather . . .

It's plain fun for me just observing him and his Jasper actions all his own.

Groom That Dog

Here's Joaqui on top of the grooming table. What's in his mind?

Joaqui must be saying to himself, "Hmmm, it's snip-snip time again. Brush here, ouch there."

Yes, grooming can be painful at times. Matted coat, usually at the tummy area and "under-the-arm", when combed can be painful 'coz the tangled hair is often times unintentionally pulled with a jerk. Ouch!

That is why, when I do comb and come across a tangle, I try to de-tangle manually with my bear hands. If the case if severe, I just cut-off the portion of the coat, but ensuring that the outcome would not be so horrible, heheh. But a decision must be made, right.

Periodic grooming is a must for it also serves as a check-up if everything is okay, especially with the coat. Eyes, ears, nails, nose, teeth, tongue, paws and "poop and pee areas" are also checked, in case something may be there that may be bothering the dog.

Doggies On The Table

I placed Jasper and Joaqui on their grooming table as I clean their playing area.

Joaqui here was begging to be put down so he can do his tossing with the ball or his wrestling with his favorite stuff toy.

The dogs do need sufficient time and attention, enough exercise and rest too. They are like kids.

Crate or Cage

Initially, a crate for me was synonymous to a cage.I viewed a dog in a crate as a prisoner. I have pictured cute dogs on top of their master's lap, inside limousines or a fuzzy dog, peeping outside the window of a moving shiny red car, the fur on their faces blown by the wind. Cute scenes!

My dogs have been crate-trained at a young age, more because of the need-basis. Crates make it easy for the dogs to tag along when going somewhere, in dog shows or visits to their pretty young veterinarian for vet meds and immunization vaccines.

They are also accustomed to "not-so-short" drives. We go to pet-friendly places like Serendra, Eastwood and Tiendesitas for some dog socializing and exercise. They have gone as far as the provinces of Quezon, Laguna and Batangas.

When they sense everyone has dressed up and with shoes on, the critters get excited. When we open the door of the crate, they go inside on their own.

I also observe that when they want some peaceful time, they go inside the crate. They just stay there a while to rest a little or sleep. One other thing they do? They go hide there when bath time comes.

Training
This refers to the process of teaching a dog to perform certain actions in response to certain commands which the dog is trained to understand. It is a general term which does not, by itself, describe what or how the dog is taught. There are many methods and objectives of training. Dogs may be trained to:

follow obedience commands (part of obedience training)
perform tricks casually or for circus acts
be a guide dog to lead the blind
be a rescue dog to find victims of a disaster
be a hunting dog to aid in hunting
aid in herding, tracking, coursing, and retrieving
follow agility commands
serve as a guard animal

Basic Concept
Most dogs, no matter what their eventual advanced training or intended purpose, live with people who want them to behave in a way that make them pleasant to be around, keep them safe, and provide for the safety of other people and pets. Dogs do not figure out basic obedience on their own; they must be trained.

Dogs as Pack Animals
As pack animals, dogs have natural instincts that favor cooperation with their fellow dogs. Many domestic dogs, either through instinct or breeding, can correctly interpret and respond to signals given by a human handler.

Dogs can be followers or leaders. The owner or handler must act as the leader of the pack, projecting positive energy and confidence.

Basic Pet Obedience Training
This usually consists of (6) six behaviors:

Sit
Down
Stay
Recall ("come", "here" or "in")
Close (or loose-leash walking)
Heel

Communicating
The hardest part of training is communicating with the dog in a humane way that he understands. However, the underlying principle of all communication is simple: reward desired behavior while ignoring or correcting undesired behavior.

Corrections
Corrections should never include harmful physical force or violence. Using force while training is controversial and should not be taken lightly, because even if it ends the behavior, when applied inappropriately with some dogs it may lead to a loss of drive (enthusiasm for the given task), stress, and in some cases even aggression. A handler may decide to use force, however, the standard used by most trainers is the minimum amount necessary to inhibit the unwanted behavior.

A simple nudge, poke or a firm "shhh" are included in corrections.

I joined an informal meeting with MS (miniature schnauzer) owners. A Singaporean MS expert did a training on the proper grooming of an MS. There are limited MS groomers here.

The props are alive, MS pets needing a great haircut, heheh.

It's fun to meet other pet lovers, on-line or even in person, what more if you get to be with dog lovers who also have dogs of the same breed you have. Terrific!

You get to learn from them and share what you know as well. The exchange of both experiences and knowledge is truly precious.

They're Back

You know what's amazing about these dogs, especially Jasper? He can detect our car when it's approaching, even if it's still far at the corner of the street.

He is always excited to see us come home. But ooh, so noisy, if only he could tone down his barking a little, but what joy to see his tail wag-to-death, heheh.

Do you know that one of the greatest fear of a dog is the thought of his owner not coming back for him?

This is why they get so anxious when left alone for a long period of time. Possibly, this is the reason why Joaqui chews on his paws at times. Hmmp.

Get That Ball

Look at him dive for that blue ball.

This canine loses all senses when he encounters a ball, of any size.

I am careful that he doesn't swallow any of his toys, in part or in whole, that would really really be bad for Joaqui.

I don't give toys that are too small or those that can easily be broken into pieces. For his teddy bears, I take of the button eyes. Final advise, do watch them at play with these things just to make sure they do not do anything harmful to themselves because of the toy.

Vomiting is a sign that they might have swallowed something (like the cotton or the threads of the stuff toy or a big chunk of their chewable bones).

My Children At Play

Such a joy to look at them . . . but a big responsibility to take in these doggies, whom I treat as my additional children.

I suddenly recalled these schnauzer figurines, so cute, capturing the significant features of the breed, plus they seem to be in motion.

Always in motion? Wait, that would be my mini-schnauzer. Joaqui would surely be "shiveringly" thrilled and in motion when at play with his toys.

He is crazy over this one, a "supposed-to-be" zebra rubber toy which he fights with full energy. He is so out-of-his head with this.

But nothing tops a "ball". Joaqui will definitely do anything to play with a ball, of any size, that is.

Just love, taking his photos playing with a ball. Sometimes, I really wonder how he is able to just toss it in the air like a little child.

Ah, dogs, forever the playful creatures.

One, Chew, Three

Joaqui has been chewing his left foot. Hmmph!

Anti-bacterial shampoo and powder do not work. Putting socks on the foot turned out to be a no-no (and funny, the more he chews). I read about washing it with tea but that would cause it to turn brown. Putting something bitter is not an option I am considering.

I am at a loss on how to handle it. There's a wound. Callouses have formed. My oh my!

I have observed he is into this activity when he's alone doing nothing, kinda bored possibly and after bath.

I changed his shampoo and diluted it. I also try to stop him every time I see him chewing his paw. What else? I wash that particular paw daily for two things: to keep it clean and to avoid stain. The vet says coconut oil or olive oil will soften the lumps.

Finally, I resorted to putting this shield after his bath so that his mouth won't be able to reach his paws.

The fur on his paw started growing again, the callouses reduced in size and the stain is not as dark anymore. However, he still chews so he has to continue wearing this "thingy" after bath.

But somehow, they love the attention.

How About Clicker Training?

Nothing. Yup, I know nothing about this clicker training thingy, but it sounds interesting if you and your dog have the patience and the discipline. I've heard, read and saw clips about it.

Why not I learn more? It is also used for birds, horses and sea animals. And even if I don't use a clicker, the things on positive reinforcement for training behavior could be of importance to a pet owner like me. " No knowledge is useless," says Jennifer Lawler.

Clicker training is an operant conditioning (also called respondent conditioning) method for training an animal using a clicker (or small mechanical noisemaker) as a marker for a behavior. The method uses positive reinforcement - it is reward-based.

For training purposes once the behavior is sufficiently reliable on the use of the clicker, a cue (e.g. a verbal command such as "sit," or "down") is added to the click, and as the response transfers to the new cue, the clicker is no longer needed (e.g. stimulus control is attained).

A clicker is just one example of a conditioned reinforcer (secondary reinforcer) or "bridge". Technically a stimulus from any sensory mode may become a conditioned reinforcer (ex. light, smell).

The marker can be any signal that the animal can perceive, so long as the signal is brief (to prevent the problem of imprecise timing) and consistent (to prevent the problem of variations that may confuse the animal).

For large sea animals the marker is usually a whistle rather than a clicker. However, not all conditioned reinforcers are sounds. Goldfish and birds such as falcons and hawks can be trained using a quick flash of a flashlight as their "clicker". Deaf dogs can be trained with a vibrating collar.

Misconception: "Dogs become fat with clicker training because they get too many treats."

Part 1 of the solution to this problem is either to use a portion of the dog's regular diet as the training treats or to use reinforcers other than food.

Part 2 is to remember that a training treat for a Labrador should be about the size of a pea or an M&M. Smaller dogs get even smaller treats. Larger dogs get only slightly larger treats.

Food is not the only reinforcer that can be used in training. A "reinforcer" is anything the animal is willing to work for in the current situation.

Common non-food reinforcers include toys, attention, and the opportunity to do something the dog wants. For example, for a dog who wants to go for a walk, putting on the leash can reinforce sitting. Going through the door can reinforce the dog who wants to go outside. Being greeted by someone is the BEST reinforcer for a dog who wants to meet and greet.

Morning Has Broken

My favorite photo . . .

This was one of those times when I tackle the dogs very early in the morning. I bathe the spunky critters and spend the rest of the morning in the garden. I groom them on top of the grooming table for hours, enjoying the cool fresh air of the morning, saying a little thanksgiving prayer while taking a glimpse on one of the bonsai trees.

I am left with the dogs for the children go to school to earn a degree and the hubby to the office to earn a living for us and the additional members of the family, the hairy critters.

This or That in Pet Care

Have you ever been caught with a decision on how to care for your pet but choosing between what's the "supposed to, but poor pet" and the "let it be and give the pet the fun and comfort"? Well, I do.

Look at this water feeder. It's a great way to keep the dog's beard dry when drinking. Wet beard means stained beard, that's it.

However, I really "feel" for the dog. At a younger age, it's okay, but as he grows, he drinks more quantity of water. Using this paraphernalia seems like giving him trickles of water when he is thirsty. Oh wow!

What to do?

Out with the feeder. Let him drink all he can and just deal with the stained beard separately. Note however, that other pet owners are successful using this.

Just sharing that as pet owners, we do face these predicaments. What's important is that when we do come to a decision, we know the consequence and how to deal with it.

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog.

The Dog and I

Joaqui and I were alone at home today. I decided to let him play after his bath. I wanted him to have fun with something new. I found this red neck pillow, free from a local food chain store for a single purchase of a certain amount.

True to my expectation, Joaqui had a festivity of his own with his new-found toy. He tosses it and catches it with his mouth.

Guess who was the other one in the house having fun, just watching the dog having fun?

To The Batcave? No, To The Dog Show

Dog shows are challenging (and a bit tiring too), for both the pets and the owners. Packing, grooming, nagging . . .

At the end of the day, it's cool to have participated. If you lose, you gain learnings and if you win, you learn how to gain from your hard work. Yo!

You have to tie up the command with a simple action and tone of voice for better recall. That's what I got from one of my readings.

Jasper is a fine dog, though a bit aggressive for my standard.

While still a puppy, we knew he would do well in the dog shows. So how old should a pup be for him to enter an official dog show?

In our case, the dog should have the necessary vaccines, at least the "anti-rabies". This is a requirement.

Then, the dog should have the courage and the ability to walk inside the ring. This can be done with some training and practice. It should also be able to mingle with other dogs and people.

It must allow the judge to open his mouth without the threat of biting. If possible the dog should also be able not to pee or otherwise inside the ring while he is on show.

Seems like grooming is not so much a factor at a young age, aside from the basic of having a clean dog.

Usually, to get the above skills, the dog is about 4 to 5 months old.

The puppy category is for puppies up to 6 months old. Beyond that age, the dog enters the adult dog category.

A Heart of a Mother

Can't help it. Just had to go to the studio to have Joaqui for some photo shoots.

Had to have him ready. Bathe, towel dry, blow dry, coat trimming, tooth brushing, nail cutting and seems like a never-ending coat brushing and grooming.

Like a true child of mine, I took him to the studio as a proud mother. The difference was, I took him in a crate instead of a stroller.

He proved to be a good boy. He behaved well in front of the camera, working with the photographer. Yoohoo!

I did some of my own photo capture at home as well, for some Hallmark moments or just so I can keep a souvenir of those hard work on grooming, my style (the mother's style).

We are no exception, since we had Joaqui blessed at the St. Joseph's church in Alabang on the Feast of St. Francis, together with other pet owners.

Yup, yup, yup . . . this doggie stayed at home.

He loves the fun of just hanging around the house, though prefers not to be "home alone". He prefers to be with a "live somebody" especially when at play. He loves his favorite toys, his tennis ball and a shabby towel.

After his bath, he anticipates play time, where he is left just doing his thing. Enjoy!

Cross Breed

The Miniature Schnauzer is a breed of small dog of the Schnauzer type that originated in Germany in the mid-to-late 19th century. Miniature Schnauzers developed from crosses between the Standard Schnauzer and one or more smaller breeds such as the Poodle or Affenpinscher.

The affenpinscher is a terrier-like toy breed of dog. It has harsh rough coat and a monkey-like expression (Affe means monkey in German). Its coat is shaggier over the head and shoulders forming a mane, with shorter coat over the back and hind quarters. It is harsh and wiry in texture. The FCI and UK breed standards specifies that the coat must be black, but the AKC also allows gray, silver, red,and tan, and belge (not beige; belge is a mixture of red, black and white hairs); other clubs have their own lists of acceptable colours, with black being the preference. The affenpinscher is a dog with a shaggy, wiry-type coat.

Affenpinschers have a distinct appearance that some associate with terriers. They are different from terriers, however, in that they are actually part of the pinscher-schnauzer of group 2 in the FCI classification and so often get along with other dogs and pets. They are active, adventurous, curious, and stubborn, but they are also fun-loving and playful. The breed is confident, lively, affectionate towards family members and is also very protective of them. This loyal little dog enjoys being with its family. It needs consistent, firm training because some can be quite difficult to housebreak. The training should be varied because the dog can easily become bored. The affenpinscher has a terrier like personality.

Affenpinschers are somewhat territorial when it comes to their toys and food, so they are not recommended for very small children. This dog is mostly quiet but can become very excited if attacked or threatened and shows no fear toward any aggressor. It is best suited for a family who likes a show and has a sense of humor.

These just show why we are so hooked up with our pets, whether dogs, cats, mice or roses. We have come to tame them and care for them. The time, effort and attention we have given our pets make them unique from the rest of the dogs, cats, mice and roses. They are OUR very own pets whom we have squeezed in to our lives.

We observed certain daily routines with our pets. In our case, we get up early so we can walk the dogs and feed them. The same things are done before retiring to bed. Of course there is bath time, grooming chores, buying dog food and supplies, taking them out to socialize and check-ups with the vet.

At times, when my schedule is so tight and faced with life's challenges, I ask, "why do I have dogs to take care of in the middle of all the things I have to do and fix?"

Well, it all boils down to being in love with these creatures and back to the quotes . . .

PCCI Features Jasper's Win at the Show

One of those joyous, memorable days . . . qualifying for the challenging competition among other beautiful dog breeds and winning . . .

An added accomplishment is that "hubby" decided to take on the role of being Jasper's handler for that event. This is why he has this opportunity to be the one in the photo.

However, we have the official photographer of the PCCI (Philippine Cannine Club Incorporated) to capture the precious moment. A plus is the posting of these photos on the PCCI site.

As for me, I work behind the camera, grooming table and bath faucet. Cool!

PHILIPPINE CANINE CLUB, INC.

Walkin' The Dog

Joaqui is always hopeful and looks forward enthusiastically to his daily walk in the morning before his breakfast.

It serves as an exercise for him and for me as well. In addition, the activity becomes a bonding moment and an opportunity to have him exposed to the environment, to people especially kids and to animals like other dogs, cats, birds and insects.

I read some interesting notes on dog walking:

Dog walking is both a pastime and a profession involving the act of a person walking with a dog, typically from the dog's residence and then returning. This constitutes part of the daily exercise regime needed to keep a dog healthy. It also provides exercise and companionship for the walker.

By now, the doggies are accustomed to taking long rides in the car inside their crates. Going to the province is okay with them. They get to have a break too from the hustles and bustles of the city. Actually, they add to the noise of the city, heheh.

Let's see how your paw is today. Seems you've been chewing at it again last night? Don't you give me that "what-ya-talkin-'bout" look.

Need to check on the pooch regularly, daily if possible and more so if I notice some concerns. It's good to have a checklist of things to scrutinize with the time lines.

To make it easier, I tie it with wake-up time or bed time or bath time or meal time if daily, or birthday if yearly, or I just scan the doggie visually during our play time.

Ears, nails, teeth, eyes, coat, etc.

Is my dog as active as usual? Is he eating well, drinking okay? Well, no harm in checking for a "well" dog.

Cool! Super cool!

The schnauzers went to the province for that cool, fresh air and lovely early sunshine.

Seemingly like active ponies, Jasper and Joaqui loved running around free, though within the boundaries of the bamboo fence.

The furry dogs also tried it up there at the tree house, overlooking the place with trees and a view of the mountain ranges.

It turned out to be an enjoyable weekend with the doggies . . . with family.

Successful Dog Handling Endeavor

Yup, that's right, after accepting some defeats (more so by Jasper upon being handled by his owner, yuk, yuk, yuk), my husband finally proved that with determination and persistence (and daily practice with the super-active dog, Jasper, they can actually win in the dog show. And what do you know, the coveted win was being Third Best in Group, rising over other beautiful dogs, a doberman, a boxer, a pincher, to mention some.

Wow, this is truly a great achievement! Am so so so over the top on this one, heheh.

Trying Out Dog Handling

We went to take part of what we call a "fun match" where we brought our dogs for a friendly competition. We knew most of the guys who brought their MS since most of them are members of the MS Club and we see each other in the different dog shows.

This dog show was exclusive for miniature schnauzers for it is a project of the MS Club. Above, in ablue shirt, is my hubby with our dog, lining-up with the competitors.

Hey that's me stocking my dog, second handler from the left please. I think I was perspiring in spite of the cool air.

Whew! I am treading on unknown grounds . . . dog handling. But why not give it a try for fun, of course my dog should help out and behave.

My hubby also participated. Good thing we have two schnauzers, so we have a dog each to handle. It was a unique experience, like having to perform on stage, with a dog as your partner (and a partner knows better what to do than you, heheh).

So how's your pet dog doing?

It is good to do pet comparison with other owners, especially if you have observed something is kinda different with your dog lately or when you are encountering a specific problem, whether it be on food, on bathing, on behavior, concern on your pet's coat, skin, ears, nails, teeth, etc.

Keep mental notes, but always consult your vet as you make a significant move on any treatment you are to do with your pet. Especially for pet meds, do call your veterinarian first before you let your precious pet swallow that pill, please.

Different strokes for different folks, or shall we say different dogs. Still, it's good to hear what the other pet owners do. First-hand personal experience is valuable information, be it a success or a failure. What doesn't work should also be taken in, so you would be able to avoid such.

Jot down some things I got from dog-show experiences, my own and that of others.

o Know the breed standards of your dog and "know thy dog" as well, faults and strengths.

o Familiarize yourself with your competitors, are they champion dogs? Surely they too have faults and strengths.

o Get your dog ready, grooming and as well as walking practices.

o Socialize your dog with humans and other animals. Have him for long walks. That will be good exercise as well. Lots of benefits on this.

o Have the dog trained by the handler himself before the date of the show for bonding and familiarization (if possible).

Don't forget to have fun in these dog shows. Even if your dog does not win this time, it's still good exposure for the little critter.

Small Toy Animals

Went to visit our breeder, from whom we got our miniature schnauzers. In his home, at the veranda, are three schnauzer figurines. They are so cute, capturing the significant features of the breed plus they seem to be in motion.

My schnauzer, on the other hand, is crazy over his toy, a "supposed-to-be" zebra rubber toy which he fights with full energy. He is so out-of-his head with this one.

Caring for Pets, Dogs of Mischief are Back

The guys are up and about after their sick leave.

Probably, the holidays were too much for them. What with all those crackling New Year fireworks. After some rest, a lot of food and some vet med, they're okay and back to their normal mischievous selves. Oh my, Jasper was down during the holidays. He was not able to join us during the New Year. He was confined in the hospital for fever during New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. He got us super worried.

However, we had him back after two days. He had a speedy recovery at home. I was there at his side especially the night I got him back. I monitored how he was doing and kept on giving him water and making him pee. That was the only thing I decided to contribute so he can recover fast. Of course we made sure he does not miss his medications.

Thank God, he is okay now. Not just okay, he's back to his mischievous self. I guess I can deal with that more than having him so behaved but so weak.

This experience has changed my attitude towards taking care of him. I was really starting to complain of his naughty behavior. For the new year, I have a new view of this super energetic dog.

Here, Jasper is the miniature schnauzer who is 5th in the line, in the middle of the mini pincher and the boxer. This is the working group.

Anyway, we plan to bring the dogs at Sereneda for an exercise walk plus dog and human socialization.

Dog Shows 2009

PCCI concluded its last dog show for the year this weekend of December. So we'll be seeing the other dogs, the dog owners, the handlers, the judges and the PCCI staff next year.

But before we end our 2009 activities, let's hear a "Hooray!"

Jasper has been awarded his trophy. PCCI has declared him a Philippine Grand Champion and the Number One Schnauzer for the year 2009.

We are so so sooo happy! We are thankful to so many (to Him of course). Special thanks as well to his Tito Jun and Tita Joy who cares for Jasper like we do, heheh.

Special mention would be his handler Jun, his breeder Dingdong and his dog friends and their MS owners of the Philippine Miniature Schnauzer Club.

Here we go again at the dog show and time to get into the ring. I never fail to get that nervous feeling every time my dogs parade.

Just like any live performance, anything can happen. Dogs can be at the peak of their act but there are those days that they are not in the mood to do their thing.

Every dog gets on the inspection table under the scrutiny of the judge's eyes and hands. A well-exercised dog may prove good points under the feel of the judge's hands. Teeth? Check. Ears? Check. Front legs? Check. Body? Check. Hind legs? Check. Okay, down you go doggie and let's see how you walk in the ring . . . here and there, in a triangle, back and forth. Hmmmm.

The dog must conform to the breed standard as to size, must be in the acceptable range for height, length and weight. Even how the tail and the ears are set are also considered. The color and the condition of the coat also count and how alert the dog is, is mentally noted by the judge.

The competing dogs are required to stay in a confident, steady, pose - stocking, that's what it's called. They line-up for the judge to see how they all look together for comparison and for him to be able to make the right selection for the "winner dog".

Judging can be tough most of the time. The looks, the grooming, the conformity to the breed's standard, the gait, the alertness, the dog's stage presence in the ring and the over-all appeal . . . wow, so many factors to consider and all of these mentally noted per dog.

Anyway, these dog shows are there for all of us to enjoy, the owners, the handlers, the breeders, the organizers, the sponsors, the audience and the judges themselves.

The Best in Show

I am always so excited to see Jasper compete with other beautiful dogs of different breeds for "Best in Show". I just love the parade of the best representative dogs of their breed.

Both owner and handler surely want their dogs to be included in this parade and take possession of the title as the Best-in-Show dog. This concluding portion had always been a tough one since all the dogs look great with their impressive form, but only one dog wins this coveted title, usually the one who has this unique air of confidence that winners have.

The Pomeranian won this day's event. Congratulations!

Event Celebration

What a great day this is! Today, we found out that Jasper is now a Philippine Grand Champion dog as proclaimed by the PCCI (Philippine Canine Club Inc.).

What a coincidence, for the day we got him last year and the day that he finally earned all the credited wins, is exactly the same month and day. Wow!

I just feel like a truly proud parent. I am so thankful. Yoohoo!

Dog Training
It is the process of teaching a dog (Canis lupus familiaris) to perform certain actions in response to certain commands which the dog is trained to understand. It is a general term which does not, by itself, describe what or how the dog is taught. There are many methods and objectives of training. Dogs may be trained to:

follow obedience commands (part of obedience training)
perform tricks casually or for circus acts
be a guide dog to lead the blind
be a rescue dog to find victims of a disaster
be a hunting dog to aid in hunting
aid in herding, tracking, coursing, and retrieving
follow agility commands
serve as a guard animal

Dogs as Pack Animals
As pack animals, wild dogs have natural instincts that favor cooperation with their fellow dogs. Many domestic dogs, either through instinct or breeding, can correctly interpret and respond to signals given by a human handler.

Basic Training
Most dogs, no matter what their eventual advanced training or intended purpose, live with people who want them to behave in a way that make them pleasant to be around, keep them safe, and provide for the safety of other people and pets. Dogs do not figure out basic obedience on their own; they must be trained.

The hardest part of training is communicating with the dog in a humane way that he understands. However, the underlying principle of all communication is simple: reward desired behavior while ignoring or correcting undesired behavior.

Basic Pet Obedience Training
This usually consists of (6) six behaviors:

Sit
Down
Stay
Recall ("come", "here" or "in")
Close (or loose-leash walking)
Heel

Corrections
Corrections should never include harmful physical force or violence. Using force while training is controversial and should not be taken lightly, because even if it ends the behavior, when applied inappropriately with some dogs it may lead to a loss of drive (enthusiasm for the given task), stress, and in some cases even aggression. A handler may decide to use force, however, the standard used by most trainers is the minimum amount necessary to inhibit the unwanted behavior.

Win Sweeps

Dog shows? Dog show superintendent, dog show handler, dog show training, dog show grooming . . . . yup we're back to those things. You see, the year is soon to end. Even the show ring has the Yuletide touch now.

It's been a while since Jasper had competed. We have not gone to a dog show for months since Jasper had his coat plucked. This weekend his coat is long enough to enlist in this show.

Jasper's friends have been winning the shows for the last months. That's great! Even the new doggies have taken center stage.

While Manny Pacquiao, Ang Pambansang Kamao (The National Fist), had been throwing his mighty punches, as viewed on television by a portion of the crowd at the dogshow, Jasper was also trying to walk his best gaiet at the ring.

To our delight, he captured the judge's heart to win the "Best of Breed" medal for miniature schnauzers.

Congratulations to Manny Pacquiao and Jasper, the champions in small packages!

New Born Photos

When Joaqui visited the province of Quezon, there were seven new-born puppies there. The pups were all fast as sleep just like the seven dwarfs when Snow White visited their home. The little critters were dozing off in complete contentment as their Mother dog kept on guard.

Joaqui's thoughts . . . "Hmmm, so this is Quezon province, Philippines. Sunny day and the air is cool and fresh, okidoki."

"Great staying here inside the nipa hut, cool shade from Mr. Sun. I do get to see everything from up here, but how do I get down from here."

"Okay, now that I'm down, how do I get out. I want to run out there. How about chasing those chickens. I have to have some fun."

"Hey, hey, some attention for the poor dog here please."

"Now that's more like it. This stuff is good. Can I have more?"

Joaqui did liked staying at the province for the day. He liked the cows and chickens. He loved coconut juice. He'll be visiting here again, given the chance and if there's no scheduled dog shows on weekends. Now, that's life.

Province Healthcare, Trying Out the Province Air

Joaqui checked out his calendar and saw it will soon be Christmas. He visited the province and tried the sunny atmosphere of Quezon. Hmmm, sure is warm outside just as I thought it will soon be Christmas, he was thinking then.

He has never seen cows before. He was curious but did not barked at the big white animals.

He stayed at the nipa hut for a while, just trying to get a hang of his new surroundings after hours of a very early trip here. He enjoyed the view and the open air.

Meeting and Making New Friends

Today, we feature Manuel. Manuel is a little boy whom Joaqui, my pet dog, met at the fun match of miniature schnauzers that was held in a newly renovated and upgraded mall in Makati, Metro Manila.

Manuel , to my surprise, is the twin brother of Enrique. Now who's Enrique to my dogs? Joaqui doesn't know him but Jasper does. Jasper is my other pet dog.

The idea is kinda cute. Jasper meeting Enrique in a dog show and Joaqui meeting the twin brother, Manuel in this dog show.
Manuel wasn't sure if he wants to be friends with Joaqui, 'coz Joaqui looks fierce, what with that beard.
Taking a step closer to Joaqui, Manuel realizes the dog is not a threat.
Testing the water, Manuel offers his hand to make friends as Joaqui looks on, seems like he's giving it some thought.
Manuel, looks him straight in the eyes, assuring him it's okay to be friends with little boys like him.
Manuel let's Joaqui be familiarized with him, his smell, his touch. Hmmm.
Now, they're friends.
Good boy, ET. No Manuel, he's name is Joaqui.

Errand Runners

The crate, I cannot over-emphasize the usefulness of the crate to me and the necessity that my dogs are comfortable being transported anywhere inside the crate. Not that they travel by air like my friend's dog, who goes to Cebu (Philippines) every now and then to visit his owner's relatives. Some dogs, like some human, get dizzy when traveling.

Today, I was kinda busy running errands and I brought along Joaqui, my miniature schnauzer. My first stop was at the laundry shop to get our clean laundry and drop off the ones needing washing. It has been raining for days now, what after two super typhoons.

From there we went to a house in Manila (not spared by the traffic), where he got to walk for a while. After checking that things are okay, we went Southbound and passed momentarily at a convenient store prior heading the grocery. I just bought food to cook for dinner at the grocery.

I was a little worried since the dog looks tired, so I decided to go straight home now. When we arrived and he got out of the crate, I gave him his tennis ball. He started to move around and play. He is his old self again. What a relief! I made him drink water and let him run around the garden for a while, there at the back of the house.

Errands done, the dog is fine. The pooch slept well. A tried dog is a happy dog they say. This has been a great day with Joaqui!

Kennel Exercise

Can't help sharing this funny dog video. I am this lazy about exercising this year.

However, what's good about regularly walking your dog, is that you get to walk as well. Just make it long enough and far enough to make the most of it, for you and your dog.

To keep you motivated, pick a place that you like and can help you breathe some fresh air while enjoying the surroundings. I tried it with my dog, Joaqui. We took a walk at the church yard, during an off hour in the afternoon. I just take in the air and the view. We had a great time together.

So keep walking the dog okay.

Walkin' the Dog, Dog Socalizing

When the sun is up and the grass is dry, then it's time to go socialize the dogs. We go to dog-friendly places like Tiendesitas, Eastwood and Serendra.

We went to Serendra, Global City, Taguig where we get to see other dogs such as seen on the photos. Our friends, MS (miniature schnauzer) owners were meeting at our usual site, "Doughnuts and Coffee" where great crispy kreme donuts reside, heheh. We usually walk the dogs together, so we go in packs, walking and exchanging updates, stories, dog show tales, etc.

It seems that the other dogs come in packs as well during this last visit. There were groups of shi-tzu, Siberian husky and beagle. Joaqui, that's my dog, met a chihuahua, a dog with shoes on, a shi-tzu puppy with its little-girl owner and other dogs and children too. He was so excited seeing dogs and human alike. He also got his share of exercise by walking around the block for like a zillion times. He was a tired, happy dog when we went home. Sleep tight Joaqui.

Doggy Gates, Who's that Doggy in the Window?

Was gone for a while, to the shopping mall, since the weather forecast advises that a super typhoon is expected the next day. I went to buy a rechargeable lamp. My old one bogged down, due to its being idle for a period of time. Better be ready in case there's no power like what happened during the recent typhoon.

After two hours, I returned home to find a doggy head peeping out of my window. My faithful pooch, Joaqui, has sensed my arrival. He knows the sound of my vehicle parking outside. He is silent for a while, just watching me going down from the car and bringing in the stuff I bought (yup, I bought some other stuff, this and that. You know how moms and wives are).

I bought snacks for my kiddos (my human sons, you know how teens look for snacks, less you want to hear them say there's no food to eat in the house. They have a different definition of food. They crave after some time in front of their laptops.

Back to Joaqui, who was not really left alone (though if you ask him, he surely felt alone, as I have given a hint, his human brothers are busy with their computers, but I appreciate that the kids still enjoy each others company).

A soft whimpering sound came from the window, meaning "come on, open the door and go inside the house now", that's how I interpret my dog's language.

Well, the dog welcomed me as I went inside. His human brothers? Do you have to ask?

Dog Show Awards . . . Award Trophies

It was like watching my children in a Quiz Bee competition or enlisting my sons in a declamation contest. These dog shows do give me butterflies in my tummy.

Before the shows, we make preparations for the dogs. We check their size and weight so we can do some tinkering in the proportions of their food and supplements, whether to increase or decrease the quantity. We check on the condition of their coat, including the length. We look into the rest of the grooming requirements like the nails, ears, eyes, etc. We ensure they practice the correct parade stint during their morning walks, not just for exercise but more, so they can have that winning gait. Of course, we should have that positive attitude that they will win.

In case, they don't win, then joining the show is counted as additional practice and experience. This is good exposure for the dog. They must be made at ease at the ring with the other dogs, both of their breed and those of the different breeds, sizes and even sounds.

Here, my heart was bursting with joy as I watch Joaqui hurdle the competition and bag the trophy, haaay!

Crate Training

Crates . . .

Crates, I did not buy the idea at first. It felt like the dog will be inside a cage alone. I did not know better before. I have zero knowledge when I got my pet, remember. I always picture cute dogs on top of the master's lap, inside a shiny red car. I even see this on TV, dogs peeping outside the window of a moving vehicle, the hair on their faces blown by the wind.

It is actually fun that way. My dogs have been crate-trained at a young age, more because of the need-basis. This makes it easier for them to tag along when going somewhere, specially in dog shows or a visit to the veterinarian for their vet meds and immunization vaccines. My first dog was sick when we got him so we frequented the clinic of his pretty young vet.

They are also accustomed to riding vehicles for "not-so-short" drives (we live in the South), for we bring them go to pet-friendly places like Serendra, Eastwood and Tiendesitas for some exercise and socializing, both with dogs and human.

When they sense everyone has dressed up and with shoes on, they too are a bit excited. When we open the door of the crate, they go inside by themselves, cute in a way.

Lately, I put the crate inside the house. I observe that when they want some peaceful time, they go inside the crate. They just stay there a while to rest a little or sleep. One other thing they do? They go hide there when bath time comes.

The Matrix . . .

One. Deciding
When you finally decide to keep a pet, it is just the beginning. There are many possibilities, you bought it, somebody gave it to you, it was a pet share, you adopted a stray animal, you became the new owner by default (it is your child’s pet suppose to be). My pets are my husband’s and you probably know how this sentence ends.

Two. Committing and Selecting
It is like having kids, once you have them, they become your responsibility. They can be your bundle of joy or thorns of sorrows, so to say, but they remain your children forever, if you know what I mean. So you better
decide with care before committing to owning a pet. Next is the selection process. What kind of pet do I take in? If it is a dog, like ours, what breed? What size? How many (oh pleassse). There are some important factors to consider. See my other post on this one.

Three. Giving a Name
Twin decision to the above is naming your pet. Spike, Cera, Ducky or Little Foot? Will you name it after a family member or your neighbor's? Shall you pick a name on a baby book or a calendar? Better pick a good one, for you will repeatedly be hearing that name, sweetly sometimes, or in a roar for other times, when the pet misbehaves. Giving your pet a name is synonymous to recognizing him, that is, giving him a life with you and your family.

Four. Answering Needs
You have to buy food, that's first and foremost, the food dish and water bottle included. Prepare his sleeping corner. If the kiddo will sleep outside the house, just check for protection from the rain, the sun and insects (and even dog nappers.) Think about where he will eliminate (toilet training), and where he can get his exercise, his training, even his playing activities and recreation. If your pet has a coat, then you must not forget about grooming. There are shops offering grooming services. The vet can do the nails and the ears, you can do the rest if you know how. By the way, provide for proper diet. Too much or too little food and water can be harmful, not to mention too much treats and toys as well. Don't be trapped with my mistake of giving too much. Good enough, I have learned to control myself. However, I must admit I still spoil them, and that makes my life more difficult, in terms of caring for the rascals.

Five. Keeping Supplies and Grooming Tools
On supplies, I can speak only for my dogs right now. Cats and other pets have different supply requirements. My dogs need bathing things like shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, including the containers and towels. It is handy to have supplies of alcohol, cotton, baby wipes, tissue, cotton swab sticks, ear cleaning solution. Optional things would be grooming chalk or powder or cornstarch, baby oil, waterless/rinse less type of shampoos, gel or spray net, a spray bottle with water, small doggie plastic bags for the poop.

For grooming, I keep combs (with and without handles), a slicker brush, a big hairbrush, a clipper, stripping knives, thinning scissors, a straight-edged barber scissors and other grooming sears, a battery-operated clipper, a nail cutter (one is battery-operated and another is a like a pair of big scissors) plus a nail file. I also provided for a grooming table, a heavy-duty blower, a hand held hair dryer and leash of all sorts. It's fun to buy silly dog clothes and accessories.

Six. Providing for Medications and Vaccines
Better that you ask your veterinarian on this one. For my doggies, the vet keeps records on a dog health book for all their vaccinations, and that could be a lot, including booster shots and the periodic shots. For medications, these again depends on your vet, he can prescribe vitamins and pet meds for the usual concerns such as, no appetite, skin irritations, coat issues, ticks and fleas, etc.

Seven. Having Fun
Let you and your pets have fun together. Expose the pets to human and other animals as well. Socializing, for my dogs, keep them a little more tamed, than when they are in their pens and crates. Yes, don't forget to get hold of crates for mobility. You can have your pets tag along with you during travels when you have pet crates available. There are pet-friendly venues like Serendra, Eastwood and Tiendesitas. You can even find air-conditioned restaurants and vacation houses willing to accommodate your little critters.

There are different languages of love you can select from to use for your pets. So choose wisely.

In this video, featuring the "Best in Show" qualifiers, are the following dogs:
a Cocker Spaniel, a Beagle, a Miniature Schnauzer, a Pomeranian, a French Bulldog and a Boxer.

Dog shows? I have been to just one in my entire life until I got myself my own dogs recently and became an element of these events.

Well, love thy husbands. Because of him I attend bonsai shows, one of his hobbies, then tennis matches, where on my own volition, I got hooked. Finally, I came into being in these dog shows because of my little babies as adopted by my husband. Soon, our house will be a Fauna-Flora Home.

Easy to look at, but a little challenging to get through with these dog shows. Much preparation is placed and much caring for the show dog is needed.

What are the basic things your dog must have to join and at least be competitive with the rest of the entries?

The dog must have the needed documents and registered with the PCCI (Philippine Canine Club,Inc.).
He must have the required updated (not expired) vaccinations, for rabies.
He should be in pink of health because upon registration, the PCCI staff checks the dog physically.

Physical appearance:
1. How about pearly white teeth and fresh breath, now that would impress the judges.
2. The coat must be:

With a well-cared for look (at least not too much discoloration especially for the white ones)
has the appropriate cut and grooming for the specific breed
Just the right length
Shiny and fresh-smelling

3. Check for nails, ears and behind if clean.
4. Hopefully your dog is not too lean nor too fat.

Behavior inside the ring:
The dog:

Must have a handler that can maximize the good movements of the dog during the parade in the ring. Other dogs need to bond with their handlers. The handler often uses a bait or a treat to have the dog follow his instructions.
Should have enough exercise and training to look good in the ring and feel good as well, when the judges hold the dog's body during inspection.
Is able to walk straight and with the head up, with the handler successful in directing the dog as requested by the judge (usually in a triangular path). Preferably does not eliminate inside the ring, especially when it's his turn to parade.
Should not quarrel or bark endlessly on other dog competitors.
Should not bite the judge when he is touched, especially when his mouth is being opened for inspection. Ouch! Grounds for disqualification.

Tips:

Socialize your dog with humans and other animals. Have him for long walks. That will be good exercise as well (not to mention it is more of a need than an option.
Have the dog trained by the handler himself before the date of the show for bonding and practice.
Don't forget to have fun in these dog shows. Even if your dog does not win this time, it's still good exposure for the little angel (or little devil, lol).

When the Mouse is Away, the Dogs will Play

Whoa!!!

Young, yes. My dogs are young and have stayed very playful. I have to confess I love watching them at play at their free form, so to speak. What is good about having two of them is seeing them tag (or shall I say pull their teeth off) over a prey. I provide them with a toy, a hand towel with a knot at the middle.

I shall repeat what I have mentioned in my other post. You have to have fun with your pets, but the way you handle them will dictate how easy or difficult it would be caring for them. There may be pets that are by nature well-mannered or the opposite, but in-house training is a must for all pets.

Basic would be that they know their names when called, even if you're already yelling, at least they recognize their names. Good for your vocal chords.

I re-arranged the house to be pet-friendly, no delicate decors to destroy or demolish. I just ensure that my house is in tack after their play, lol.

When the mouse is away the dogs will play, that is, when my lap top mouse is at rest and I'm not blogging, I let my dogs play while I watch their show. Of course, there should be an end to the show, unless you have the whole day free and the house can take all that beating.
